Review: UdderSweets - Weston & Fort Lauderdale, FL

Serving up ice cream, shakes, chocolates, cupcakes, cookies and candy, UdderSweets is a sugarholics dream! They have something for everyone, from candy apples to bulk candy offerings including giant jawbreakers and gummy bears. The best part about this shop is that everything is homemade from the ice cream to the chocolates. The shop features 32 flavors of ice cream with the motto “we scoop it and you top it.” My favorite of UdderSweets’  is their homemade chocolates which includes chocolate-dipped oreos, truffles, caramels and fudge; but the jumbo peanut butter cup is what I die for. It is udderly delicious!! After only a few bites, you will be chocolate wasted.

They currently have locations in Weston and in Fort Lauderdale/Las Olas. I have been to both, but prefer the Las Olas location because they offer a bigger selection and since I don't go for the ice cream or the candy, I find that the selection is also fresher. Although some might find it to be a bit pricey, for me it is well worth it because I can say that there is a huge difference between the peanut butter cups I find here and what I can get at any convenience store.

Restaurant Review: Davie Sub & Sandwich Cafe - Davie, FL

I was kind of excited to go to Davie Subs; the idea of the small local family owned joint that doesn't have much of an appeal on the outside but is a treasure on the inside. Although it did not turn out to be the treasure I wanted it to be, I can say that it is definitely a family restaurant that the owners take great pride in. As you enter the door, you feel at home and they work to ensure customer satisfaction, which is probably the reason they have been in business for over 30 years. The restaurant itself is very quaint, but they do have a few booths where you can sit and enjoy a comfortable meal.
They have a really big menu with lots of options to choose from. I always have trouble making up my mind so it was a bit of a distraction for me, but I did manage to choose something and being the biggest lover of Thai food, I selected the Roast Beef Thai Wrap. I must add that the Roast Beef Thai Wrap was apart of their Boars Head menu. Apparently, they are the only sub shop in Davie that sells the Boar's Head Brand. The Roast Beef Thai Wrap was good but nothing special. It had a little too much peanut sauce and I didn't appreciate the cold refrigerated meat in the sandwich. I don't know if it was because I was expecting something more but I didn't feel like Davie Subs offered me something more than what I could find at any other sub shop, dear I say like Subway. If I went to school in the area (Broward College is next door) or lived or worked in the area, it is worth coming for a quick and affordable lunch, but since none of the above apply to me, sadly, I probably will never be back.

Taste of Mexico Festival - Saturday, April 28, 2012 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Taste of Mexico Festival! The Taste of Mexico Festival is a true Celebration of Mexican Food and Culture. Guests will have the opportunity to be acquainted with exhibiting Mexican restaurants and catering services, sample authentic Mexican cuisine, enjoy entertainment for the entire family, and learn about Mexico's rich culture through its gastronomy.

Mexiqueando, an online media platform for Mexicans living abroad, puts together the Taste of Mexico Festival. Our organization promotes culture, lifestyle and Mexican businesses in Miami. Mexiqueando serves as the primary source to gather the Mexican community.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla. The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and commemorates the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. Contrary to popular belief, it's not the Mexican Independence Day, which is commemorated September 16. Cinco de Mayo has been unofficially "adopted" as a U.S. holiday and is celebrated more here than in Mexico.

Don't know where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Come to the festival and taste all your options in advance.

This is a great opportunity to sample signature dishes from the best Mexican restaurants in town.

Wine Review: Stella Rosa Il Duca Imperiale 1917 (Sparkling Red)

I love this wine! It is soft, fruity and smooth with a slight fizz. It is one of those wine that are great for people that aren't really wine lovers. It might be too sweet for some but served chilled and accompanied by fresh fruit and cheese, it is exceptional. It makes a great party wine!

What makes it even more amazingly great that it is priced between $10-15.

Ruby Tuesday - Hiatus-Davie, FL

My friend had received a coupon for a free burger for his birthday by joining their email club, so we decided to have an early lunch at Ruby Tuesday. Since we arrived so early (shortly after opening), the place was basically empty and we were seated right away. The restaurant was very clean and so was the salad bar. I think ever diner besides us went the salad bar route, so if you are into salads, it appears that theirs is pretty good.

In not much of a fan of salad so I decided to get the Avocado Grilled Chicken Sandwich. I typically would get a burger, but since I am trying to cut back on my meat consumption I got the chicken sandwich but I was disappointed. The chicken was a thick cut that lacked any flavor or seasoning, so it just did not taste good. The chicken was cooked well but the thickness of the chicken made it hard to taste the flavors of the cheese, avocado and even the bacon. The fries were alright but the fact that I had to eat them with ketchup meant I didn't really enjoy them but they were crisp and I know that someone else would really enjoy them; I am just picky with my fries. The other side I got was the Sliced Tomatoes but I did not like that either. It was doused in balsamic vinaigrette and it was too sweet for my taste. My friend had the Boston Blue Burger which I have had before and have enjoyed. It is topped with blue cheese crumbles, crisp onion rings, and their house-made Boston barbecue sauce. It may not be the best burger you have ever had but it is still a good option at a restaurant of this kind.

On this visit, I had water but their Sangria is pretty good for only $5. The also offer a few other cocktail options for $5 all day long; no need for happy hour.

Domino's Pizza: Artisan Tuscan Salami & Roasted Veggie Pizza

I had an opportunity to try one of Domino's new Artisan pizzas and out of the four choices available, I tried the Tuscan Salami & Roasted Veggie. Although I am not a big fan of pizza chains and usually opt to make my own at home, I was pleasantly surprised by this Domino's option. I have not had Domino's in a really long time but my sister was always obsessed and for a long time ordered a pie a day, so I have had my share but was never really a fan. The crust was the right combination of thin that I like; not too thick and not so thin that it is just crunchy. Although many may be disappointed that they are unable to select their own topping options, the option that Domino's preselected were the right complement to one another and I could not think of adding or subtracting anything from it except maybe some pepper flakes because I like everything spicy. But the main reason I liked this pizza was that it used white sauce instead of the typical red.

I do appreciate that Domino's is offering a more gourmet pizza that you can enjoy at home, but at the end of the day, I will probably continue to make my own pizza at home. However, if I am ever being lazy and craving pizza, I will probably call in an order of Artisan pizza.

Largo Bar & Grill - Downtown Miami, FL (Bayside Marketplace)

The Largo Bar & Grill is located within the Bayside Marketplace in the heart of downtown Miami. One thing that cannot be denied is the view is spectacular and with plenty of outdoor seating it is a great location to come chill, have a few drinks or a meal overlooking the water! There are also plenty of TVs to enjoy watching a Heat game if you are unable to get tickets or simply cause you want a nice place to hang and watch the game.

As far as the food goes, it's not so hot. Considering Largo is suppose to be a more upscale restaurant, it was surprising that the crab cakes were mostly composed of bread crumbs and as a result tasted like mush (your could not taste any crab), and that the Filet Mignon was overcooked and tasteless. On a positive note the Mediterranean Snapper, which is served on a bed of mashed potatoes and topped with Mediterranean vegetables was actually good. It was a very generous portion and if I ever came back, I could order that again. The drinks (I had a mojito) were typical.
Largo Bar & Grill is a little expensive, but it is located inside Bayside, which is geared towards tourist so despite that, the prices are on par. If a great ambiance is your main focus then it is great place to sit by the water to enjoy the view. If the view alone is motivation enough to come and check this place out, go for a seafood or fish dish or just stick to the drinks.
